Take your first day in Budapest to visit some of its old architecture along the Buda side of the Danube.
1. Buda Castle
Start your day in Buda Castle, a UNESCO site right on the Buda Hill. Standing here, you can see great sights of the city and find both the Budapest History Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery. Baroque buildings, relaxing garden courtyards and beautiful gardens are just some of the sights you can walk around at the castle grounds. Take in the city’s old stories and enjoy the river view from this part of the city.
2. Matthias Church
A short walk from Buda Castle brings you to Matthias Church. It is considered a church and also a fine example of architecture. Due to its special tiled roof and intricate details, the church draws people’s eyes in the Castle District. You may see inside the church which is decorated with fine frescoes and stained glass illustrating Hungarian kings and prominent saints. You should always go to the top of the tower to check out Budapest from an above angle.
3. Fisherman’s Bastion
Across from Matthias Church stands the extra-ordinary Fisherman’s Bastion. From this area, you get a great view of the Danube, Margaret Island and Pest from the sky. In honor of the medieval fishermen’s guild, this section is named and its seven pretty towers recall the seven Hungarian tribes who were the earliest settlers here. Since it looks like something from a fairytale, this place is crowded with photographers. Do not miss out on all the fun arcades and unusual viewing spots; don’t forget to take some great Instagram photos too!
4. Chain Bridge
After you’ve seen the views at Castle Hill, make your way to the Chain Bridge over to Pest. It matters since it allowed people to travel across the city daily, leaving an important mark on Hungarian history and keeping a reminder of unity. Reaching the summit allows you to see amazing views of the river and the large buildings that stand along it. Watch the scenery and let the river leave a strong impression as you move across it. Lights on the bridge transform its magic at night, making a romantic walk over the bridge possible.
5. You can find many Ruin Bars in the Jewish Quarter.
Explore the Jewish Quarter and look for its remarkable ruin bars once the day is done. Common spaces are often in factories, warehouses or courtyards which makes them seem very distinctive. Make sure you have a look at Szimpla Kert, as it started the ruined bar trend. Due to its different looks, expressive decor and fine artwork, the place has fun elements even if it is only a bar. While visiting, enjoy a drink or two with some of Budapest’s alternative community members. You can find street food and live music in the district, so it’s a great place to wrap up your day.
On Day 2: Exploring the Traditions of Budapest
On the second day, you’ll experience the city charm and energetic life in Pest which is celebrated for its big avenues.
1. Hungarian Parliament
Start your second day by exploring the Hungarian Parliament, because it stands out among the city’s biggest attractions. The Danube River banks hold this building which is one of the world’s largest and finest parliamentary structures. Go on a tour to find out what puts the building’s interior above the rest and definitely see the Dome Hall and the Crown Jewels. See which architectural designs exist from that time and what history you can learn about Hungary’s politics. Whenever I see both it and the inside, I find myself with a sense of awe.
2. St. Stephen’s Basilica
You can’t miss St. Stephen’s Basilica which is in central Budapest. The name of the building comes from St. Stephen, Hungary’s first king, whose hand is stored in a reliquary there. To explore, observe its strong front and then look inside at its detailed interior. If you like, take the elevator or walk the 364 stairs to experience the amazing views from the terrace. Arrive at the right moment for organ concert, so you can enjoy the special music and improve the atmosphere here.
3. Popular with those who come here
If you want to sample Budapest’s dishes, try the Great Market Hall which is the oldest and largest indoor market. You can find both fresh items from the area, meals people love and a mix of traditional crafts. It’s a good idea to grab something to eat, whether it’s a Langos or a chimney cake, while walking among the market stalls. As you go up, you’ll see souvenirs and when you get to the ground floor, the menus offer you genuine food. You’ll be able to enjoy the atmospheric setting, smell and touch of local produce here.
