by

Welcome to Budapest!

Its capital is famous for its splendid architecture, long history and energetic culture. Budapest is made up of two parts by the Danube River, Buda and Pest. In this article, you will learn about the leading attractions and important places to visit on the Buda part of the city.

1. Buda Castle

Castle Hill is home to the Buda Castle which is a UNESCO Heritage site and an important symbol of Budapest. Views from this palace complex of the city are simply breathtaking. See the sights like the Royal Palace, National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. Make sure to enjoy a walk around the Castle District which surrounds the castle.

Other than being historically important, Buda Castle holds lots of festivals such as wine tastings and cultural events which attracts many people from around the city. Going up cobblestone streets next to the Citadel and seeing the cafés and shops is often a favorite way for visitors to enjoy the medieval ambience of Budapest.

2. Matthias Church

Matthias Church which stands in the Castle District, is an excellent example of Gothic architecture. Notice the remarkable exterior covered in colorful and decorative tiles. Go inside to appreciate its amazing interior full of many detailed features. The church’s tower gives visitors a beautiful view all around.

Besides being a church, Matthias has been the venue for royal weddings and coronations in Hungary. Because artworks and frescoes inside the church show Romanesque and Baroque styles, it excites visitors who admire art and history.

3. Fisherman’s Bastion

Building right next to Matthias Church is the beautiful Fisherman’s Bastion. Somlo’s neo-Gothic terrace has seven towers representing the seven leaders who helped found Hungary. Now you can see large stretches of the Danube River, Margaret Island and the Parliament building in Pest.

The Bastion received its name because of the fishermen who defended this place in the Middle Ages. Now, it is a famous spot for sharing on Instagram, especially during early morning and late afternoon. It is free to wander through most of the Bastion, but there is often a cost for the upper terrace.

4. Gellért Hill

This hill which rises above the city, lets you see incredible sights of Budapest all around. Go to the platform and admire the famous Liberty Statue which represents freedom. The fortress of the Citadella is another attraction on the hill, built in the 19th century and giving both its history and more wonderful views.

The hill is named after the missionary Saint Gellért, who died on this site. A statue honoring him is erected on its own base, near the foot of the hill. All hiking trails are properly marked and visitors can enjoy both quiet walks and amazing views for taking pictures.

5. Cave Church

The Cave Church which is part of Gellért Hill, is created inside a cave that looks like a church. Wonder at the attractive rock walls, collection of old religious works and sense of peace. Make sure you don’t omit this place and the chance to visit a spiritual haven.

In 1920, Italy’s Church of Orthodox Gourmet started being run by Pauline monks. From the Communist period, it was closed and it did not reopen until the fall of the Iron Curtain. You can still join a religious service there and it can be a touching experience for those who visit.

6. Margaret Island

The lush green area of Margaret Island is located right in the middle of the Danube River in Budapest. Leave the hustle of the city and enjoy its peaceful parks, gardens and leisure centers. Visit some old castle ruins, enjoy a calm walk or hire a bicycle to really soak up the silence.

Musical fountains with classical music shows run all day in the park and there is a small zoo and swimming area here. Being car-free, the island offers a good place for families and anyone after quiet relaxation amid nature.

7. Rudas Baths

Enjoy a thermal bath at Rudas Baths which is considered one of the best and oldest in Budapest. Relax in the mineral-rich waters and admire the wonderful Ottoman buildings around you. Sit in the hot pools, steam rooms and saunas to get the most relaxed feeling possible.

From the 16th century M.I.R.L. Rudas Baths include many original pieces such as the domed roof and eight-sided pool. There are days designated for men and women, as well as for everyone and the hotel has a rooftop hot tub with great views over the river.

8. Castle Hill Funicular Railway

If you wish to save your energy on the various hills in Buda, choose the Castle Hill Funicular. A quick and lovely trip on the cable car brings you from the Chain Bridge to Buda Castle. Take in the old-fashioned atmosphere and take lots of photos as you walk.

It began running in 1870 and was revived after it was damaged by World War II. This is a convenient way to climb Castle Hill and people also enjoy it for the historical cars and wonderful panoramic views.

9. Tunnel System Below Buda Castle

Access a secret place under the Buda Castle. For miles along its twisted tunnels, the cave network exposes old cellars, passageways and hidden spots. Attend a tour to discover the legends and stories that make this underground place special.

For hundreds of years, these caves were used as shelters during wars as well as places for prisoners. Tours might feature displays of wax figures and fun lessons about scary legends.

10. Matthias Fountain

Be sure to see Matthias Fountain which stands in front of Buda Castle and is famous. It shows various moments from Hungarian history and legends. Trust your eyes and look at the beautifully chiseled parts of this sculpture.

Alajos Stróbl made the fountain in the late 1800s. It is dedicated to King Matthias Corvinus and a beautiful huntress. Because of its dramatic form and ability to tell stories, the “Trevi Fountain of Budapest” is a common name for it.

Conclusion

The Buda area of Budapest is full of historical, cultural and natural beauty. There is Buda Castle which shows the city’s grand side and Margaret Island, where you can relax. Check out the city’s special attractions, explore its history and take in how beautiful it is.
